I wanted to .. but well I couldnt finish maybe because I prefer self help and finance books..
Great book. Although it may be partly out to date the subject is still a very actual one. A big thanks to Nancy Friday for writing it.
As one half of an interracial marriage, I have become accustomed to purient inquiries such as "what's it like with a black woman?" Interracial relationships are frequently viewed as brazen explorations into forbiden sexuality, many finding it difficult to fathom two people of different races simply falling in love and enjoying a normal life together. Friday's book includes interracial sex in the section on beastiality! Perhaps giving us some insight into how she views such unions. This book is an vile insult to interracial couples and their children.
When I first read My Secret Garden 25 years ago, my reaction was WOW! I was just discovering my lesbianism and realizedI wasn't the only one with these wicked thoughts. The fantasies still give me hours of arousal and new ideas for my fastasy life; some of which have become pleasurable realities. My wish is to see more concerning lesbians. My current fantasy is to see this book published in an audio version...I might never leave my bed if that happened! Thank you Nancy Friday for your wisdom and courage!
Nancy Friday's "classic" My Secret Garden is problematic in many ways. First and foremost, the letters and interviews included in the volume do not at all represent women's sexual fantasies on average. Mrs. Friday herself acklowledges that most women are not aware that they have sexual fantasies and most would never dream of telling them to others. At the same time, again and again she seems to view the fantasies described as typical of women in general, which clearly they are not.Why are so many of these fantasies lesbian in nature? Because most women on this planet (or at least in the US and UK) are lesbians? Certainly not. These are the fantasies of a small minority of women. I guess Mrs. Friday would say that these women were brave enough to tell her about their fantasies, but if you read the stories closely, you will notice that many of them speak of guilt, embarrassment, and suffering. Many - or perhaps most - of these stories were written as self-therapy. Women with a healthy sexuality, who do not have sexual fantasies involving dogs, donkeys, rape, sex before an audience, or other women, have no reason to write letters or accept interviews by Mrs. Friday, because they are in no need of therapy.Another reason why I seriously doubt that these are typical sexual fantasies of women in general are that so few of them involve romantic details. Very few of them take place on a beautiful beach, for example. There are no expensive restaurants, no violin concerts in the background, no sunsets.Furthermore, Mrs. Friday feels she must at all costs hold on to the stereotype feminist dogma that men and women are identical psychologically - and if there are any differences, they cannot be natural, but must be the result of (wrong) training. But why? The only reason for this seems to be that Mrs. Friday wants it to be this way. As if two year old boys and girls were not already extremely different psychologically, although during the first two years, parents tend to treat them fairly the same way. This false assumption leads Mrs. Friday to claim that women look at men's bodies exactly the way men look at women's, which of course is not true. For example, women tend to look at men's ears to check if they are beautiful, whereas men usually have no interest at all in women's ears. Instead, and to find material for her book, Mrs. Friday wrote an ad asking for women's sexual fantasies, writing in the ad that she herself uses to watch men's crotch when out walking. Several women then wrote her letters that they, too, use to watch men's crotch when walking, going with the underground, etc. This method of "doing research" is not very unbiased. It means asking for certain results. Likewise, Mrs. Friday cannot understand at all why so few women fantasise sexually about young boys, whereas so many men fantasise about young girls. Well, perhaps because male and female sexuality are radically different. And why did several of the women in the book have sexual fantasies about their fathers when they were children and in their teens? Perhaps for the same reason they do not fantasise about young boys as adult women: Women are looking for an authority figure, men are not. And this has not changed during the several decades since Mrs. Friday did her "research". Mrs. Friday bemoans that women don't take the initiative to relationships and sex - because she wants men and women to be identical - and she hopes that her book will make women change their minds and become more active. But women still extremely seldom take the initiative, although Mrs. Friday's book is on the market since some decades now, and although women's mothers do not tell them to be passive anymore - why? Could it be something rooted in their nature after all?The book is just a collection of fantasies - and many "real" stories; actually there seem to be more "real" stories than fantasies in the book - by a small minority of women. It preserves false feminist claims, and it takes neither women nor men seriously, because the author is completely uncritical of all of the reports. Some of the reports seem to be made up, as when a twenty year old woman claims she has been married for three and a half years and before she got married she had sex with thirty different men and she disliked all of these intercourses, which seems slightly exaggerated. Mrs. Friday also celebrates all these fantasies, without at all taking into account that many of them, like the sadist and masochist ones, and the ones involving animals, are a sign of the need for psychotherapy, and that the woman who wrote the report in many cases is probably suffering because of a sexual disorder, either natural or the result of abuse. Like the woman who was forced by her older brothers as a child to have intercourse with a schoolboy, and since then, she always imagines having sex with her brothers when she is having intercourse with a man, even as a 51 year old. Or the woman who was spanked by her teacher as a child, and, when she herself becomes a teacher, sexually enjoys spanking her own pupils. To Mrs. Friday, sexual fantasies are just signs of "liberation", something to enjoy and be proud of, nothing problematic.
